With more than 350 families living on or below the poverty line in Blyth, Blyth Town Council have partnered with a number of local community groups for Operation Elf, to ensure families don’t suffer this Christmas.

Charities and organisations have supported the community through the Covid crisis and will be arranging food parcels to be delivered to any families in need in Blyth, Northumberland, along with gifts for children.

To make this happen, Mayor Warren Taylor is asking for the people of Blyth for their help and support with Operation Elf.

Mayor Warren Taylor said: “Christmas is already an expensive time for families, but this year with with so many people being furloughed or made redundant as businesses close down, I really am concerned that many families will simply not cope this Christmas.

“The pressure to provide our children with everything they want at Christmas time is immense with many families facing the stark choice of eating or staying warm. The extra burden of buying presents is a big worry for parents and we want to do all we can to help.”

Operation Elf are also signposting help and advice to those in need. One organisation which is helping people through the crisis is The Northumberland Community Bank. They help families who would be turned away from high street banks and offer a safe alternative to payday loans and loan sharks.

Families living on and below the poverty line won’t end after Christmas and therefore Morrisons and Asda are both supplying trolleys for Blyth Food Bank and as well as toys for children, which will be given to those in need.

“We are now closed, if you need help please get in touch with Northumberland Communities Together during the festive period.

We are all so happy to have helped to put a smile on so many faces, we hope you all have a happy Christmas please stay safe.

Thank you to all those very generous people who donated so much.

Thank you to the teams of elves who worked so hard packing boxes of food and gifts, those who have been delivering all the food. You are truly fabulous”
